When the Spanish realized that there is no gold in Hispaniola, they converted it into a bread basket, a land of farming. The Spanish established a colony named "Santo Domingo". In the earlier times, the location of the island made it a haven for pirates. By the end of the 16th century Spain was losing control of the seas to the French, British and Dutch forces (actually, they were buccaneers or pirates). French buccaneers established a settlement on the island of Tortuga in 1625 and with equal minded British and Dutch people, they formed a lawless international community against the Spanish occupier. In 1967, Spain ceded the western third of the island of Hispaniola to France and within a period of 100 years, Saint-Domingue became one of the richest colonies in the 18th century French empire. It was known as the "Pearl of the Antilles".
