Carnival is a major cultural event in Haiti which is celebrated through a combination of music and dance. Carnival (Kanaval in Creole) in Haiti starts on the second week of January (as pre Kanaval), and leads up to Mardi Gras or the last day before Catholics begin Lent on Ash Wednesday. It serves as a final shebang before the 40-day abstinence of Lent. Grand feasts are celebrated on the final three days (also known as three fat days or real carnival): Sunday (Dimanche Gras), Monday (Lundi Gras) and Tuesday (Mardi Gras) before the Ash Wednesday. Carnivals are good windows of Haitian culture. The three immediate days before the Ash Wednesday, a final celebration is hosted grandly in different parts of Haiti. The main affairs, however, remain centered at Port-au-Prince. Paper mache masks area big attraction of Jacmel Carnival. There are many stories behind these masks.
