This is the 18th year the festival has been held and is considered one of the Caribbean region's annual premiere music events. The WCMF is a Dominica-sponsored yearly event, created by Dominica Festivals Commission. It is recognized by the world music community as one of the few authentic indigenous music festivals in the South Region. Dominica started the WCMF in 1997 as a way to raise the island's profile within the international tourism industry, and attract more tourist dollars. Dominica timed the WCMF to coincide with its Independence celebrations and encourage extended stays from tourists, who had come to enjoy the Independence festivities.
