Hey Guys,

Tuesday September 02, 2008 04:51 PM

We just got home from the parkway and I can tell you that although there is a lot of frustration within the band, we are happy that things ended up on a very positive note with the help of Shabba, and Wyclef...it truly wasnt about Carimi anymore, so nou tap pran plezi nou ampil... We finished the parkway, went by the juges and were still playing way after 7hpm... An official release will follow but I wanted to just clear up the air about the tet camion issue...

We have been around the float 24/7 for the past 3 days... The Truck was the first thing we(Garry Pierre Pierre, Fito and I) secured more than 1 week ago... We made sure that we had the smallest one so it wouldnt affect the front speakers.. Driver was suppose to show up at 9h30 am to hook up to the float for us to leave ... We wanted to be the first haitian band on the parkway... I got there at 9ham, fito around 8h30, the workers and sound people were there from 7ham... plus the people from Venus, watching the float... the driver told us that he came at 9ham, didn't see anyone and left, that is a lie! ! !... He wouldnt answer his phone until close to 10h30am... I may miss a few minor details, but when we got a hang of him, he was back in the bronx and told us that there was no way for him to get back... we are very disapointed as we wanted to show NY what we were about, and position and that truck were key to that...

We got another truck at around noon to 1hpm but it was soo high, it cancelled half of the front of the float....

We are not gonna call sabotage due to one reason, we are not cry babies... we'll regroup and make sure that this never happens again....

This is our first Eastern Parkway and there will be many more... Congrats to all my fellow bands... Haiti te bel ampil jodia....

Big up to all our sponsors, Solution Management, Kompa on Broadway, Venus prod, Voila, Varaonsite, Les Enfants de Demain, Palenet, Haitian Times for helping us, and everyone who contributed to this....

 One Love
 Mike

Mon Petit Nom Music Video By Tanya Saint Val - Haiti Music Video Of The Week For August 16, 2008

Saturday August 16, 2008 02:07 AM

Born in 1966, Tanya Saint-Val grew up in the music world. When Tanya Saint-Val was still only a little girl, she was already imitating her grandmother singing operetta. Aged nine, she sang on an album of traditional music with her father, a guitarist, singer and professional composer.

After a spell with the Vikings de Guadeloupe, she joined the Daniel Forestal orchestra, where she met Dominique Zorobabel, a future singer with Zouk Machine. At the same time, she continued singing Ella Fitzgerald songs at local dances in Guadeloupe. She then met Pierre-Edouard Decimus, manager of the group Kassav, who introduced her to the French Caribbean recording studios, where she soon got regular work as a backing singer.

In 86, After several months touring with Experience 7 and Zouk Machine, she brought out her debut album, "Tanya Saint-Val", a deliberately zouk production which she followed up two years later with a second album with the same title.

Following a third solo album in 89, "Zouk a Gogo", which contained the hit single "Lanmou kreyol", in 91 she brought out "Soul Zouk", a subtle blend of zouk and soul with contributions by Jacob Desvarieux, Patrick Saint-Eloi, the ever-faithful Willy Salzedo, and Jean-Michel Rotin, to name but a few. The album put Tanya Saint-Val on the map outside the confines of the French Caribbean world, and was in the Top 50 (the French charts) for 14 weeks.

WALALI WALALA By Coupe Decale - Haiti Music Video Of The Week For August 9, 2008

Saturday August 09, 2008 02:04 AM

Coupe Decale is a type of popular dance music originating from Cote d'Ivoire and the Ivorian diaspora in Paris, France.

Drawing heavily from Zouglou and Congolese rhythms, Coupe Decale is a very percussive style featuring African samples, deep bass, and repetitive, minimalist arrangements

While Coupe Decale is known as Cote d'Ivoire's definitive pop music, it actually began in Paris, created by a group of Ivorian DJs at the Atlantis, an African nightclub in northeast Paris. These Djs, known as the 'Jet Set' became popular for their flamboyant style, often showing up at the club with large amounts of cash which they would hand out to audiences on the dance floor. Their aesthetic defined the early sounds of Coupe Decale, apparent in the genre's name. In Nouchi (Ivorian slang) Couper means to cheat and decaler means to run away, so Coupe Decale basically means to cheat somebody and run away. The 'somebody' cheated is generally interpreted to mean France or the West/Europe, finding parallels to the idea of "The Man" in American culture. Especially in the beginning, the songs often celebrated those who had used guile to 'make it' abroad.

The genre's first hit, "Sagacite" was pioneered by the late Stephane Doukoure (a.k.a. "Douk-Saga"), a member of the 'Jet Set', during the post-2002 militaro-political crisis in Cote d'Ivoire. The hit became a success in African clubs in Paris and spread quickly among djs in Cote D'Ivoire. According to Siddhartha Mitter of Afropop,

"Coupe Decale has become very popular at a time of conflict; in fact, Ivorian music has really for the first time taken over dance floors all over Africa at exactly the same time that Ivory Coast, the country, has been going through this protracted political and military crisis, with debilitating social and economic effects".

Although arising from this time of political turmoil, Coupe Decale lyrically addresses topics such as relationships, earning money and maintaining a good mood or 'bon ambiance'. Much of its lyrics refer to specific dance moves, often referencing current events such as the avian flu dance or Guantanamo (with hand movements imitating hands raised in chains). These global themes could have helped to make Coupe Decale so deeply popular across a politically divided Cote d’Ivoire and spread its influence so far across Africa and the diaspora. Increasingly non-Ivorian artists, particularly in the Congo, are beginning to play and incorporate the musical style. Notably among these artists are Congolese Djouna "Big One" Mumbafu and French/Malian rapper Mokobe with "Bisous" feat. Dj Lewis and "On Est Enseble" feat. Molare.
